COCO FRIO

Mary has gotten all the fixins' for a coconut creme pie which she plans to make.   The shredded coconut that she got reminds me of the street vendors in Miami selling Coco Frio (cold coconuts) from push carts.
They use a machete to cut the top of the coconut off.   They do it with ease.
Now the guy in the picture above was using what looked like a meat cleaver.   But the guy in the picture below is using a machete which is what my street vendor used.
The result is a hole in the top of the coconut from which to drink the cold coconut milk (actually it is more like coconut water).   They put a straw in the hole and drink a flavorful drink of coconut water.   No, that is  not me in the picture below.   It is just a picture that I got from the internet to illustrate how the coconut is served.
One day as I was driving down a city street in Miami I decided to try a coco frio.   I stopped at a street vendor and got one.   When I got back to the office I told a supervisor who was from Cuba about the coco frio.   He asked me how I liked it.   I told him that I didn't like the taste.   He smiled and asked me if the vendor had put some sugar into the coconut to sweeten it.   I told him "no" and he still smiled.
So that was my adventure with coco frio and I am confident that with a little bit of sugar a coco frio will be really good.
I am also confident that there will probably be some sugar in Mary's coconut creme pie.    Sorry, no picture, it hasn't been made yet.   Pictures to follow soon, hopefully.   Lew
