No, I am not a Hobbit and my name isn't Bilbo Baggins.   But growing up in a Hamlet seems to be
rather unique.
Leo Lillimagi was a classmate of mine.   He was a fantastic artist who had an
incredible talent.   We were both in the
6th grade.   The year was 1954.   One day Leo was sitting behind me.   I noticed that he was sketching something on
blank paper.   It was a scene of a Roman
army in the midst of a battle.   He
showed it to me.   I was so impressed by
the picture that I offered to give him 25 cents for it (my lunch money).   He agreed and I went without lunch that day
but I had that fantastic sketch.   I kept
it for many years but somewhere in time it got lost.   I surely wish that I had it now.   Without a doubt I must have been the first
sale of his artwork.
Leo was powerfully built and was the star of the Highland High School
Leo graduated from Highland High School
My parents moved to Miami ,
Florida during my senior year and so I didn't

I felt bad that he had died 2 years ago.   I only found out about it recently.  I wrote this blog because I just didn't want
him to go quietly into the night and be forgotten.
If you knew Leo Lillimagi please leave a comment.   I would really be interested to read
it.     Lewis Dallas

When my husband was a child he had pictures drawn and I decided to Google Leonardo's name. What a great story!
Made an impact his first year of eligibility at Miami (as a sophomore--back then, freshmen could not play varsity.). Looked like a very promising sophomore linebacker. My recollection is he got hurt and missed his junior year. When he came back as a senior, he was not the same player. His career ended very quietly.
Leo told me that he had pinched a nerve in his shoulder in his junior year and got a knee injury his senior year. I guess that spelled the end of his having a pro career. My understanding that he coached high school football in New York for a while and ended up teaching art in the University of Nevada. He had a super nice personality. Lew
My father passed away almost a year ago and he had a self portrait done by Leo when he was in high school. Now it's one of my most prized possessions.
COACH LILLIMAGI COACHED MY HIGH SCHOOL FOR ONE YEAR, 1966 WHEN I WAS A FRESHMAN(OAKWOOD SCHOOL, POUGHKEEPSIE, NY). HE LEFT QUITE AN IMPRESSION ON ME AND I HAD BEEN A DIEHARD MIAMI U FAN SEEING GEORGE MIRA ON NATIONAL TV LOSING TO PITT IN 1961 10-7. I WAS NEVER ABLE TO FIND HIM GOING FORWARD AND WAS SADDENED TO LEARN OF HIS PASSING. A GREAT, KIND, GIANT OF A MAN

Leo was my art teacher at Las Vegas High School. I found him to be personable, intelligent and a good mentor. I remember he came to class with a black eye one day and he told me he got it playing rugby. We got a good laugh out of that. I loved his description of a "line" when he said it was an extension of a dot through time. I will always have those memories. Thank you Mr. Lillimagi. I graduated from LVHS in 1981.
